Bijoy Sarkar: The legend who glorified the folk music

People often reflect their core selves through art and remain immortal by their contribution. The song is one of the art forms that explicitly manifest various human intuitions and metaphorical cravings. Many types of song genres have been invented in this regard and artists try to do the full justice with their creation. Bijoy Sarkar is one of the Bangladeshi folk music artists who had done this justice entirely with this creation. 
Folk music is a special kind of music usually sung by rural area people. Songs on patriotism, human velocity, religions praising, and secular point of view are composed and sung by these artists. Bijoy Sarkar, a versatile artist, is notable among those who have left his footprints in different art genres as a poet, lyricist, music composer, and folk musician. This legendary personality was born on 20 February in 1903 at Dumdi village, Narail. His father Nobo Krishna Bairagi and mother Himalaya Kumari named him Bijay Krishna Adhikari. He had a pretty challenging life. The name of his school was Tabra primary school. He served as a teacher and collector. Besides, he was the disciple of both Rajendranath Sarkar and Kobiyal Monohar Sarkar. Later in 1929, he formed his song group and gained recognition as “Kobiyal”. Rabindranath, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jashimuddin, Abbas Uddin Ahmed, and many more other eminent personality has accoladed his works.

In his songs, he has demonstrated the serenity of melancholy, craving of living, effervescent endearment towards the beloved, and uttering wishes of knowing the Almighty entirely. People have been touched by the dulcet melody and realistic lyrical expression of his inventing music genre called “DhuyaGan”. He is also recognized as “PagolBijoy” among his admirers. He was directly involved with approximately 400 songs. Moreover, he has performed over 4000 times in Bangladesh and India. People who are fond of folk music are observed to sing his songs and remember him as a legend. 
 
Bijoy Sarkar took his last breath on 4 December 1985. As an acknowledgment of his creation and contribution in the field of art, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh's highest civilian award in 2013. His songs were released as an album in 2004 called “Bengali folk songs, Bijoy Sarkarer gaan”. His songs bring tears and pathos at the same time. For his remarkable contribution to music, Bijoy Sarkar will remain immortal in the hearts of millions.
